All About Compressed Air

One of the most taken for granted pieces of technology is the air compressor. In fact, when we ask friends who aren't engineers what they know about air compressors, most of them just shrug and say "I don't know."

Yet in many industries, such as manufacturing, construction, even food and medicine, air compressors are integral parts of their operations.

Air compressors in a nutshell

An air compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of air by reducing its volume. Compressors are similar to pumps: both increase the pressure on a fluid and both can transport the fluid through a pipe. As air is compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas, resulting to an increase in the velocity of the gas.

To site an easy example, take a blowpipe / blowgun natives use. Once a person blows into a pipe, the air is compressed by the pipe, propelling the dart forward.

Compressed air drives the pneumatic devices, automations and tools used in the making of almost anything - food, buildings, medicine, cars, and a host of other end products.

I’m thinking about getting one of them. Thanks for sharing information. That post was so helpful. I had no idea what brads were until you clarified. I would love to get one, but am wondering how loud it is. I live in a condo on the top floor so my neighbors may not appreciate my DIYing. Where do you typically do your projects? Click here
